Lesson Plan.

I Warm up.

Teacher:Good morning, dear children. I am glad to see you. How are you? Let's start our work.

II Breakstorm.

Teacher:Today we're having a very interesting and unusual lesson, because we'll make a trip to London. You know that travelling is considered one of the most pleasant and popular activities. But I think you'll agree that this trip is rather difficult. How do you think why it is so?

P1:It's difficult because Great Britain is far from our country.

P2: We need different kinds of transport to get to London.

P3:We should know how to behave on the roads in Great Britain and London.

P4:We should know where to go and what to see in London.

P5:We should know how to ask for help in London if you need it.

Teacher: You are absolutely right. So these are the points we are going to discuss today. We'll

-revise different ways of travelling and choose the transport to London;

— speak about road safety;

— learn how to get around London.

So, let's start our journey. You know that there are a lot of ways of travelling. Look at the pictures and name the ways of travelling. (plane, train, bus, car, ship, taxi, underground, bike, foot).

Now you'll see the boxes where one of this ways is described. One by one you'll read the explanations of these ways of travelling and all the other pupils in the group should guess what it is.

1. The traffic is sometimes slow but you'll get a good viewof the city, especially if you sit on the top desk. (bus)

2. This is one of the fastest ways of travelling across the city. You may take one on the streets or call to the local company. (taxi)

3. It's a very fast way of travelling. You will have free meals and drinks there. But some people think it is very dangerous. (plane)

4. It's a very comfortable way of travelling. There are no traffic jams. There are a lot of stations and you can choose any of them near your house. (underground)

5. This way is for people with time and energy. You can stop where you want and at any time you want. Besides, riding it you'll always keep fit. (bike)

6. It is very comfortable to travel by this mean. You may choose the shortest way. But there are a lot of traffic jams on the streets now. (car)

7. It is one of the most pleasant ways of travelling. If the weather is fine you can spend all the time on the open air, breathing the fresh sea air. (ship)

8. It is not very fast but rather comfortable. You can travel for a long distance. It is not so dangerous as travelling by plane. (train)

9. It's a very slow way of travelling but you may not be afraid of traffic jams, height, deep water or other dangers. (foot)

Teacher:I see you know all ways of travelling very well. But do you remember that we should choose one of them to get to London. First of all tell me please? Where is Britain situated?

P1:On the British Isles.

Teacher: What is it washed by?

P2:It is washed by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea and the Irish Sea. It is separated from the continent by the English Channel.

Teacher:That's right! So what means of travelling can't we choose to get there and why?

P3:We can't choose travelling by bus, car, train because it will take us a lot of time and several transfers.

P5: I think we can't also choose travelling by sea because there are no oceans and seas around Moscow.

Teacher:Yes, that's why I think there is only one way of travelling which satisfies all demands. What's this?

P6:It's travelling by plane.

Teacher: So the first step of our journey is coming to the airport in Moscow, getting on board a plane and flying to London.

Teacher:Now we landed in London Airport. Do you know any information about it? Let's read and be ready to do some tasks after reading.

Reading.

New vocabulary.

deserted — заброшенный, пустынный

waste of land — пустошь

military — военный

civil- гражданский

land- приземляться

takeoff- взлетать

London Airport.

London International Airport is the centre of many routes covering the whole world.

The airport area is very large now. But many years ago it was deserted waste of land. During the Second World War it became a small military airport near the village Heathrow.

On the 1st of January 1946 the airport opened for civil service . Plane tickets were very expensive and only rich people could travel by air.

By 1950 Heathrow had become the busiest airport in Europe. Planes became fast, safe and very comfortable.

Now over forty-two million passengers use the airport every year. They can fly to any part of the world. The airport stays open 24 hours a day. But the planes can't land or take off during the night hours. People go to different cafes and restaurants there or visit one of the several duty-free shops. Heathrow Airport is never asleep.

Choose the correct variant.

1. London International Airport covers …

a) small territory

b) huge territory

c) not very large territory

2. During the Second World War there was … near Heathrow.

a) a village

b) a military hospital

c) a military airport

3. Nowadays Heathrow is the name of …

a) the village

b) the airport

c) the routes covering the whole world

4. At first people couldn't fly a lot because…

a) the price of the tickets was very high

b) it was very dangerous

c) it was difficult to get to the airport

5. You can fly to … from London International Airport.

a) Europe

b) New World

c) all parts of the world

Teacher:Very good. Now I think when you are in London Airport you won't get lost or confused. As you understand Heathrow Airport is near London that's why we should choose the other way of travelling to get to London. What can we take?

P1: I think it's possible to take a bus or a taxi.

Teacher:I agree with you and think it will be pleasant to watch British landscape. So we're coming to London on the bus or a taxi. Now we're here on London streets. But you know that getting around the town can be dangerous if you don't follow the rules of road safety.

Group work.

We're going to work in two groups and make the list of Do's and Dont's when you are on the streets.

Green group will write and speak about the things you must do on the city streets. Red group will discuss the things you mustn't do on the streets of the city. Write your rules on the paper and stick them to the blackboard.

Do:

1. Cross the street only when there is a zebra.

2. Stop before you walk onto the road.

3. Stand on the pavement waiting for a bus.

4. Cross the street only when there is a green light on.

5. Crossing the street look on the right and then on the left. (If you are in Britain because they drive on the right hand side of the road)

6. Be very carefull on the streets.

Don't:

1. Don't cross the street between parked cars.

2. Don't push each other crossing the street.

3. Don't cross the street when there is a red light on.

4.

5.

Teacher:You know the rules well and I am sure you will be very attentive pedastrians and never meet with an accident.

Listening.

Teacher:Now it's high time to walk the streets of London. First of all you'll hear two people speaking on the streets of London. Listen to the dialogue for the first time and tell me the address this person wants to get to.

Andy: Exuse me. Can't you help me?

Pete: Sure. What do you want?

Andy: Where is 42 Green Street, please?

Pete: Oh, that's easy. Walk to the corner and then turn to the left.

Andy: To the corner and then to the left?

Pete: That's right and then walk two blocks to the traffic lights. And you are in Green Street.

Andy:Thank you.

Teacher:What was the address Andy wanted to get to? Listen to the dialogue for the second time and tell how to get to this place.

Pair Work.

Now your task is to make a dialogue. You'll have papers where the place you want to get to is written. You should ask your partner about help. The task of your partner is explane how to get to this place. Pay attention to the expressions on the blackboard. They will be useful to you in making dialogues.

Asking for directions:

How can I get to…?/ Is it …?

Giving directions:

Go straight ahead / Turn left / Turn right / It's round the corner/ It's on your left / right / Take bus№ / It's opposite/behind.

Don't forget to be polite travellers! Act out your dialogues.

Results.

Thank your for your work. Now let's sum everything up. What was the theme of our lesson? What did we revise? Your marks for ythe lesson are…
