II.T: Olympic Games are the world's number one sport event. For thousands of athletes they mean a chance to win gold and glory — but that's not all the Games stand for. They are also an important symbol for billions of people around the world — a symbol of hope, peace and friendly cooperation between nations. Today you are the representatives of the Birtish Olympic team. You’re going to discuss the state of affairs in your team. Prepare your badges and introduce yourselves.

S1: Hello, I’ m Paula Martin, sporting reporter.

S2: I’m Jimmy Grey, President of the British Football association.

S3, S4, S5– Members of the British Football Association.

S6: Mr. William Brown, a football coach

S7: Mrs. Alice Hamilton, vice-president of the London Gymnastics Club.

S8: Miss Dolly Fennel, a champion in swimming.

S9: Miss Pamela Carrie, British women s gymnastics champion.

S10: George Striker, a football player.

S11: Billy Thomson, a football player.

S12: Miss Priestly, track and-filed champion.

T: Thank you. Let’s begin out talk.

S1: Ladies and gentlemen! I'm going to write an article for the newspaper "Sporting News" on how our English sportsmen and sporting teams are preparing for the forthcoming Olympic Games. You've agreed to meet me and give some information. I'd like to know about the state of affairs in your teams and if you would invite any young sportsmen to our national teams.

S7: I’d like to answer the question. Of course, we'll invite young sportsmen. These competitions will give young sportsmen a chance of demonstrating their potential capabilities. But I’m sorry to say that English gymnastics can offer little consolation. We have a few experienced sportsmen. But we are doing our best to improve on our previous results.

Si: Thank you, Mrs. Hamilton. A few sportsmen, national champions in different events, are here. I have several questions for them.

Miss: Carrie, last year you took the 1st place in all national gymnastics competitions. What are your sporting plans for the future.

S9: Of course, I hope to improve my results this year I've been training hard all year, and my coach has suggested many new and interesting elements in different kinds of exercises. I'll be demonstrating them during the Olympic Games. And my dream is to be among the medal — winners.

S1: Thank you. And what about you, Miss Priestly?

S12: It's one more opportunity for me to test my form. I think that my results will be better than before besides I want to give pleasure to our fans watching the competition. Their support is very important for me.

S1: Thanks a lot. Your point of view on sports is very interesting. What can you say, Miss Finnel?

S8: Well, swimming has always been popular in Britain. As for me I hope to improve my former results. Every sportsman, if he is a true sportsman, wants to improve on his previous results. If he stops progressing, he loses hope and stops being a sportsman in the true sense of the word .

S1: Thank you, Dolly. And now I'd like to turn to our football team. Will you say a few words about it , Mr. Brown.

S6: Football is very popular with the English. It has been played for hundred of years. There was a time when England was the world champion in football.

Over the last few years the English team has not won any championship, but we have taken many young new players onto our national team. The team to play has been selected except for the choice of central forward. I've got two players to choose from. They are George Striker and Billy Tomson. Introduce yourself, please.

S11: I'm Billy Thomson. I'm 25. I have scored over 100 goals in my career. To my mind I'm good in the air and excellent with both feet.

S10: I'm George Striker. I'm 19. I have played for Swansea City for two seasons and have scored 50 goals in my career. I think I'm very fast and excellent in the air.

S2: OK. What do you think about these candidates? Look through their characteristics.

    (проcсматриваютданныеспортсменов)

S3: Well. George is younger than Billy. He's got strong points. He is faster then Billy, he is a good tackle. Besides we must give this young talent a chance of showing his skill.

S4: I doubt whether George Striker should be included on the team. Billy Thomson older than he, but he is more experienced. He loses his temper quickly and has recently begun to lack stamina.

S2: Let's vote then. Those who are for George Striker or Billy Thomson raise your cards (…) Well, the majority is for the inclusion of… So, the question is settled. My congratulations to you.

Si: Thank you for you information. Now, I can say that you're preparing for the future games very seriously. And I hope our sportsmen will have gold, silver and bronze medals. I wish you good luck.

T: Thank you for your talk. I'm satisfied with your work. You've got the following marks…

In conclusion I'd like to pay your attention to these words by Pierre de Coubertin

"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part in, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle."

I wish you to be strong and healthy, get rid of your bad habits and go in for sports.
