Education abroad

Тип урока: комбинированный
Цель урока: знакомство с университетами и колледжами США и Великобритании через исследование и презентацию.
Сопутствующие задачи: Познавательная ознакомить обучающихся с колледжами и университетами англоговорящих стран;
Учебная – совершенствовать навыки употребления лексики по теме "Education abroad”;
— научить работать над проектом;
— научить писать письмо-заявление для участия в программе обмена школьниками и студентами;
Практическая научить применять знания на уроке и во внеурочное время;
Воспитательная воспитать чувства толерантности к другим народам, а также чувства уважения к сверстникам, которые добились успеха в жизни сами;
Оснащение урока компьютер, мультимедийный проектор, презентации обучающихся

Ход урока:

I. Оргмомент. Teacher .Good morning. Glad to see you. In a year you will finish our lyceum and you will enter universities to continue your education. You will have to study English on a higher level. Many universities in Russia offer their student exchange programmes when students can go to English -speaking countries to improve their English, to make friends, to learn about traditions and customs of other countries, and finally to become independent.

II. Актуализация знаний. Teacher. Now listen to the dialogue and tell me what we are going to talk about today. (Students listen to the advert). (Приложение 1) . Right. We are going to talk about education abroad.

To succeed in your education you need to have determination. Some traits of character are important. What are they? (Students answer).

III. Cоздание проблемной ситуации. Исследовательский метод. Student 1. I have found Abraham Lincoln’s words about success on the Internet, «Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other thing».

Student 2. Let us see what Universities our students would prefer if they had a chance. I ‘ve carried out a survey into the types of Universities students of our lyceum prefer. Look at the diagram which describes their preferences. A large majority of students choose Universities of Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge. You can see that Princeton and Massachusetts Universities are popular too.(Приложение 2)

Teacher : Now Valya ( Student 3) is going to tell you about her research. Take sheets of paper and write down the most important information about Universities in English-speaking countries -the year of foundation, the place of location, the type of University, the number of students and teachers. (Приложение 3).

Student 4. I ‘d like to give you some recommendations. If you are planning to go to Universities in English-speaking countries, bear in mind that there is no difference between colleges and Universities there, as they all can give their students higher education. After graduating from University you can get the degree of either a Bachelor or a Master. It depends on how long you’ve studied there and which programme you’ve chosen. Don’t forget that the level of applicants should be rather high. You’ll have to take the TOEFL examination, which is usually taken by students who don’t live in English-speaking countries. After taking exams you’ll have to write letters of application to as many colleges and Universities as you like. Don’t forget about letters of recommendation from your teachers. You are sure to write an essay for the University Committee, for example "Why do I want to study here?” or "Books I like reading” or "My future plans”.

IV. Самостоятельное открытие знаний. Работа в микрогруппах . Teacher: Before writing these letters you need to have some information about the programmes the Universities offer. Now I want you to work in microgroups of 2. Read the information in ex. 22, page 133. Discuss it and write down 3-4 questions you would like to find out about student exchange programme .(Students read their questions).

V. Применение новых знаний. Teacher: Today you have a unique chance to write a letter of application to Cindy Grabe, Grand Forks Schools University of North Dakota. As you know she visited our Octyabrsky Lyceum last September. You can see her and our teachers on this photo. (Приложение 4). They talked a lot about students exchange programme. Take these sheets of paper and write the letters of application. Ex.23 on page 133 can help you. Use these tips .

VI. Рефлексия. Teacher: Let’s sum up. So, what are the steps for those who want to participate in Student Exchange Programme?

— Choose the colleges & Universities you would prefer to study at

— Choose the programme you would like to take part in

— Take the TOEFL examination

— Write letters of application

— Send letters of recommendation

— Write statements of purpose

— Receive letters from colleges & Universities and make a choice. (Приложение 5)

VII. Домашнее задание. Творческое. I hope your knowledge of English and skills of writing a letter of application will help you to succeed in life and achieve everything you dream of. Your homework for the next lesson is to find some extra information about Volgograd Universities that offer their student exchange programmes and make computer presentations. …. Your marks are…..
